Megan Black, the bold 70s rock-inspired musician from Livingston, is currently working on her second album. At 25, she is already making waves with a fresh collaboration, teaming up with queer synth pop band, Thundermoon on their track, you.me.
Reminiscent of an upbeat 80s club anthem, you.me instantly makes you feel good. Although it differs from Megan’s usual style, she embraced the change with open arms: “I love writing songs and collaborating with people. One of the songs on my album is like the part 2 of this queer pop track, everyone's dancing, happy."

The new project has been a long time in the making, reflecting the many highs and lows of Megan’s experiences: “This next album is literally a soap opera. Every song is a different world and it’s like a timeline.”
Her debut album, Deadly is the Woman, was created during lockdown and captured a raw chapter in her life. It was a powerful statement, born out of anger and the pressure she felt to live up to an ideal feminist. While it connected with many, Megan says this new album reveals a more vulnerable and introspective side: “I have since learnt that there is no such thing as being the perfect feminist, it’s good for me to have a balance between being mad at everything in the world to also being like ‘yeah I’m a human and I’m allowed to live my life and figure stuff out for myself.’”

Although still in development, Megan can't wait to share her music: “I am so excited about it and it's just been so nice, with everyone that's worked on it and been part of it, it’s just been an absolute dream team.”
Each track Megan writes, usually comes from a melody that has been playing in her head before shaping it on the piano, guitar or bass. From here it evolves from a folk idea to a 60s/70s inspired rock song: “All that goes on in my brain is little tunes. I can’t remember what anyone has just said to me or anyone's name or people’s birthdays but I will remember a tune that I wrote 8 months ago.”

Megan, who once dreamed of becoming a footballer, took an unexpected turn into music after receiving singing lessons from her grandparents, a gift that changed everything. Since then, she has been heavily inspired by folk, growing up listening to Bob Dylan and playing in a folk band: “When I was really young, I loved Bob Dylan and Hannah Montana. These are like the two opposite spectrums of my music taste and since then, I have kept gathering influences.”
Over time, icons such as The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, Jimmi Hendrix and Janis Joplin have been pivotal in transforming Megan’s personal and musical style: “I remember the first time I listened to Kate Bush, my mind was blown and I think a big part of that was the theatre of it all, like it was just so cool to me.”

Now, Megan is getting ready to take her music to America with performances lined up in New York, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Los Angeles: “It’s crazy, it’s insane, I just haven’t processed it. I feel very lucky.”
Yet, over the pond in Tallinn, Estonia, is where one of Megan’s most unforgettable gigs took place: “I was stuck with this shower curtain around my legs and then my backing vocalist, Katherine - she saw that I was in distress and she came and she made this weird performance out of it. It was really fun.” Megan could also not forget the time she played on a canal boat in Manchester, trying not to jump at every movement of the barge!

With such an exciting road ahead for Megan, we asked what she hoped the future entailed: “I want to live by the sea, I want to learn to surf, I want to learn how to make sourdough bread and I want to play on the Jools Holland Show, Hootenanny.
With a mix of personal goals and career milestones, Megan continues, reflecting both where she’s been and where she’s headed: “I am feeling very hopeful for the future for my own career and there are a lot of exciting things and exciting collaborations. I am just surrounded by good people and I get to make music for a living and that’s pretty cool.”
We’re really looking forward to hearing Megan’s new music and hope she has a wonderful time writing and performing in the States!
