Fife pop artist Rosie Alice, shares her inspiring experience at La Sierra Casa, the songwriting camp that kickstarted the writing of her latest single, ‘DREAMER.’ Located in Spain, the camp is led by The View’s frontman, Kyle Falconer alongside Scottish music veteran, Michael Ward.

Rosie, 32, who is currently based in Glasgow, has always displayed a love for music, spending seven years in school playing the cello. However, La Sierra Casa became the motivation into considering it as a profession: “This is when I started writing my own music. I taught myself how to play guitar during lockdown which has helped me write songs but never really had the confidence or knew the process of putting out music before I went to the camp.”

'DREAMER’ was written when she returned home from her first visit: “I remember feeling like I was getting older and life was moving fast especially when all my friends were getting married and having children.” That familiar notion of still feeling 18 is what Rosie put pen to paper about: “The song is about growing older but not letting that stop you achieving.”

Rosie is influenced by a range of musical styles: “My family introduced me to David Bowie, Radiohead, The Carpenters, The Clash. I have always loved dance music and classical music too.” Additionally, Rosie draws inspiration from artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish to infuse her pop/indie sound.

"The Song is about growing older but not letting that stop you achieving"

The creative process for each song is different, reveals Rosie, yet listening to classical music helps to spark ideas. From here, she will sing lyrics and a melody over the top of a track: “Lyrically I tend to pick situations or events that have happened and write about those - amazing what a bit of heartbreak can do for a song.” Often, Rosie may also experiment with guitar chords before writing the melody and lyrics.

In contrast, Rosie’s debut single, ‘Best Part of My Day’ followed a different journey: “I had the lyrics and melody for the chorus but didn’t have the chords.” It would end up being one of her exciting trips to La Sierra Casa where “it came to life.”

As a result, La Sierra Casa has become a special place for Rosie - a safe creative space, encouraging musical experimentation: “It’s hard to put into words how great it is. I’ve met some of the best people out there. Everyone is so supportive and you get to work with extremely talented producers.”

Whilst soaking up the sun, Rosie has had the pleasure of writing with Jon McClure (Reverend and The Makers), Callum Beattie, Kyle Falconer and Carl Barat (The Libertines). With each visit, Rosie feels motivated and inspired: “Everytime I go it (I’ve been 3 times) gives me a drive when I’m having writer's block or feeling a bit like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

In doing so, Rosie feels incredibly grateful that she was signed up: “Michael Ward and Kyle Falconer have created something really special and I’m so glad my mum pushed me to go there. If she didn’t book me in, I certainly wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now.”

In fact, her most memorable gig was playing to a sold out crowd at PJ Molloys where she supported Cammy Barnes, a ‘fellow Fifer and festival headliner’ she met at La Sierra Casa: “Will always be so thankful to Cammy for giving me that opportunity.”

Rosie’s dedication to her passion has truly paid off as she was shortlisted for not one, but two Scottish Live Music Awards. Rosie received nominations for ‘Best New Live Artist of the Year’ and ‘Acoustic Live Artist of the Year’ which took place last December in Glasgow: “It’s been a whirlwind year and a half and feels like a dream to be shortlisted. Super grateful to everyone who has been supporting me and who voted for me, I owe them all a pint!”

Next, Rosie will be releasing her new track, 'Toxic Loving Ways' on Valentines Day and hopes to headline a future show: “TRNSMT would be class and of course Glastonbury (a girl can dream).”

You can catch Rosie on the 30th January supporting Dictator at PJ Molloys in Dunfermline. Following this, she will be joined by Kyle Falconer and fellow Scottish musicians at the La Sierra Casa Collective Launch. This will be taking place on the 7th February at the Old Dr Bells Bath in Edinburgh.
