How would you describe the style of ‘Say What You Want'?

Sean: 'Say What You Want' is an upbeat track which infuses elements of pop, disco and funk in a way that only The Passing Sages can! A simple, yet infectious vocal hook is sure to get any crowd singing along with the band.

What was the inspiration behind writing 'Say What You Want' and what theme(s) does it centre on?

Holly: I think I wrote the lyrics for this tune back when I was about 18 so I can't even remember now what the inspiration for the song was. It's very much open to interpretation!

Could you tell me about the creative process?

Nic: So initially, Holly introduced the ideas for this song, which consisted of the lyrics, vocal melody and some chords, to us back in 2019. We jammed it out as band and fine tuned some of the ideas and ended up with what we felt was a pretty solid song that we quickly added to our live set.

One thing that I personally felt was that at its core there was a really good song but what we were doing musically and arrangement wise just wasn't letting it achieve its potential.

Upon releasing our Burnin' Up Ep in 2020, we got to work demoing and developing "Say What You Want". Throughout 2021 and 2022 we continued to try different arrangements and tweak parts until we landed on what we felt was the best version.

This song has gone through so many changes and for those that have seen us live over the last few years have probably heard the many different iterations. Despite demoing the track numerous times, we continued to develop and tweak the song the whole time we were recording and mixing the final version and we are all really happy with the final outcome.

What are your favourite songs to perform live?

Carrie: I much prefer playing our original material. It’s exciting to see the audience's reaction to our songs. My favourite song to perform is called Dangerous, which we hope to release next. Watch this space.

Any future plans in the pipeline?

Ian: There are a number of things I am excited about, regularly releasing new music being one of them. Releasing music also presents the opportunity to work on songs that have been in the background and there is one song in particular I am looking forward to getting stage worthy.

I am also excited for playing more gigs, it is what I enjoy most as a musician and now we are working with Reaction management, I'm eager to see what we can achieve together.
