Fife based band, The Urban are underway in releasing their first two tracks this spring. The collective includes Daisy as singer/songwriter, Dylan on drums, Duncan on bass (and shouting!) as well as Murray on guitar (joining Duncan with shouting!).

The Urban, who enjoy exploring a range of styles, chatted to ‘it’s live’ on their upcoming singles:

“They are quite aggressive, a little bit angry. I think music, like all art, is definitely a reflection of the times and so we have stuff to say.” (Daisy)

“Disturb the comfortable. Comfort the disturbed.” (Duncan)

The rest of their material is planned for their debut EP which is anticipated to drop this year: “We can’t wait for everybody else to hear it. I’m quite a perfectionist, so I like making sure that I am really tweaking this and getting things right.” (Daisy)

The Urban collectively takes influence from bands such as Fontaines D.C., Soft Play, Amyl and the Sniffers, Gang of Four, Queens of the Stone Age and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as well as genres such as rock, funk and punk. Each member has diverse yet complementary music tastes, allowing them to share and discover new artists with one another. When asked how they would pigeonhole their style, Duncan jokingly replied with: “Psychedelic, saxophone based, sex, funk from heaven.”

This eclectic range of styles links to their creative process where the band thrives on experimentation:

“Coming up with ideas that you get from other things and then seeing how that would work in this context. I’m a really big fan of jazz and I’ll go, ‘how would this jazz influence work?’” (Duncan)

“It becomes a different genre of music we write every time.” (Murray)

“It’s a very cool fusion, you know, of everyone into one.” (Dylan)

The Urban are inspired to write about issues that are happening around them and aren’t afraid to confront these head on: “Get angry and that’s what we enjoy about our gigs - that we’re able to get a crowd moving and that gets us moving. Releasing a lot of energy that I think we all kind of have stored up.” (Daisy)

"Yeah, it’s okay to be angry. I think folk don’t understand that. There’s moderation.” (Murray)

The Urban therefore aims to form a strong connection with their audience. As they explain: “We want people to feel like they have a space to also feel all the way that we do about the world.” (Daisy)

On stage, their favourite track is ‘Gorilla Glue’ however, the band also highlight their improvisation piece where members will switch up their instruments. Definitely, not one to miss!

“That’s a lot of fun and Dylan, he really helped get the crowd involved and that completely makes a difference when you’re on stage.” (Daisy)

"100%. Just getting people up to my level. We’re all about involving the crowd.” (Dylan)

Currently, The Urban are working hard to complete their upcoming singles but, we can hopefully expect a gig announcement soon!
